A traffic accident can happen to any driver, regardless of driving experience. However, the situation becomes more complicated when the person at fault flees the scene. In such a case, it is important to act correctly to preserve evidence, find the offender, and obtain compensation.
1. Record information about the perpetrator
If the at-fault driver tries to escape, try to remember or write down:
- The make, model and color of the car.
- State license plate.
- Special features of the car (stickers, damage, tuning, etc.).
- Description of the driver's appearance.
If you have a dash cam, save the recording - it will be valuable evidence for the police.
2. Do not leave the scene of the accident
- Turn on the emergency alarm.
- Turn off the engine and display the emergency stop sign.
- If there are any injuries, call an ambulance.
- Notify the police and insurance company.
3. Look for witnesses
Eyewitnesses can help establish the circumstances of the accident. Ask for their contacts so they can confirm your version of events.
4. How to get compensation?
If the perpetrator of the accident fled, the injured party can contact the Motor Transport Insurance Bureau (MTIB). To do this, you need to submit an application and prepare the following documents:
- Passport and TIN.
- Vehicle registration document.
- A copy of the accident report.
- Compulsory insurance policy ("motor insurance").
- Bank details for receiving payment.
The application process takes up to 90 days. It is not recommended to repair the vehicle until this time in order to preserve all evidence of damage.
By following these steps, you can reduce your risks and increase your chances of recovering your losses.
