El Salvador will only accept convicted criminals and will charge the United States a fee for doing so.

El Salvador has expressed its willingness to accept deported criminals from the United States, regardless of their citizenship or country of origin, including Americans, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, Bloomberg reports.

El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele proposed this as part of a unique migration agreement with the United States.

"As a sign of exceptional friendship with our country and recognizing the challenges we face, President Bukele has agreed to an unprecedented agreement. More details will be provided at a later date," Rubio noted.

The statement was made during his diplomatic tour of Latin America after meeting with Bukele.

Bukele confirmed the offer on social media X, saying that “El Salvador has offered the United States the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system.” He said his country would only accept convicted criminals and charge a fee that “would be relatively low for the United States but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable.”
