Russia has agreed with Sudan to build a naval base

Up to 300 Russian military personnel, as well as no more than four ships, will be able to be stationed at the base at the same time.

Russia and Sudan have reached an understanding on the construction of a Russian naval base in the country. This was announced by the acting Foreign Minister of Sudan, Ali Youssef Sharif, Russian media reported on Wednesday, February 12.

"We have reached a mutual understanding on this issue, so the issue is quite simple. I have nothing to add, we have agreed, we have agreed on everything," Sharif said after talks in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Recall that the agreement to establish a logistics point for the Russian Navy in Sudan was signed back in 2020, when the previous leadership was in power in the country. However, the document has not yet been ratified.

Sudan's strategic location on the Red Sea coast makes it an important partner for countries interested in a naval presence in the region. This deal could significantly strengthen Russia's position in Africa.
