The postal service did not provide any information about why there was such a sharp change in course, as well as the reasons for introducing restrictions.
Instead, the service said it would work with the United States Customs and Border Protection to ensure the collection of new duties on packages from China and avoid disruptions in their delivery to Americans.
The publication notes that a prolonged restriction on parcels from China could have caused large-scale disruptions in the delivery of purchases from Chinese online platforms popular with US shoppers, such as Shein and Temu, which offer cheap clothing and other goods shipped directly from China.
Due to the low cost of most goods on these platforms, parcels with them were subject to the de minimis customs rule, which allowed for no customs duties on postal items worth less than $800, and which was repealed by President Donald Trump's decree introducing 4% tariffs on imports from China on February 10.
In recent years, the application of this rule has faced criticism due to a sharp increase in the flow of duty-free packages from China, which US officials blame on Chinese online stores, in particular, Shein and Temu.
The United States is also concerned that the increase in the number of postal items from China is making it more difficult to screen them for security risks.
China has called on the United States to stop politicizing trade and economic issues and return to dialogue and consultations regarding the 10% US tariffs on all Chinese imports.
