North Korea is likely to begin producing drones jointly developed with Russia in 2025, NHK writes, citing “numerous sources familiar with Russian-North Korean relations.”
It is noted that the countries have reached an agreement under which the DPRK receives technical assistance from Russia to develop several types of drones for mass production.
“The alleged deal was concluded against the backdrop of strengthening military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang. Last year, they signed a treaty on a comprehensive strategic partnership,” the publication writes.
According to the sources, the deal to develop the drones was made in exchange for North Korea sending soldiers to help Russia in the war against Ukraine. They claim that Russia does not want to provide support for the DPRK in developing nuclear weapons:
“They say Moscow is concerned that factors such as Pyongyang’s nuclear tests could complicate the North’s relations with the United States, as well as with neighboring countries, including China.”
Recall, I previously wrote that Kim Jong-un called for the mass production of kamikaze drones.
In November 2024, the North Korean dictator oversaw the testing of various strike drones under development. He reportedly made the development of UAVs for air and sea use a top priority. Kim also stressed the need to quickly establish a system for their serial and “full-scale mass” production.
