The petition was initiated by British Columbia writer Qualia Reed and received support from Canadian New Democratic Party MP Charlie Angus, who is an active critic of Musk.
Reid’s petition, filed on February 20, accuses Musk of “engaging in activities contrary to the national interests of Canada” while serving as an advisor to Trump. The petition claims that Musk’s ties to Trump make him “a member of a foreign government that seeks to undermine the sovereignty of Canada.” The petition also calls on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to immediately strip Musk of his Canadian citizenship.
Commenting on the petition on social media, Musk called Canada a "fake country."
Canadian media reports that 500 signatures are enough for the petition to be considered in the country's House of Commons, and now a discussion of the issue in parliament is becoming increasingly likely. Canada's House of Commons is due to resume on March 24, although the country could call a general election before MPs return to parliament. The deadline for collecting signatures for Reid's petition ends on June 20.
A person whose Canadian citizenship has been revoked must wait 10 years to obtain it again.
Musk was born in South Africa but holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, model and nutritionist Mae Musk, who is originally from Regina, the capital of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. He is campaigning to shrink the size of the U.S. federal government on behalf of President Trump, who has consistently questioned Canada's sovereignty since returning to the White House for a second term on Jan. 20.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country will never become part of the United States, despite numerous statements by US President Donald Trump.
Trump also said he intends to proceed with his plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican goods starting next week.
