Fresh potatoes are a useful product in many ways, but there are times when they absolutely cannot be used. They were listed by German specialists: for example, the vegetable was stored in the refrigerator, not cleaned or it has wet spots.
Kept in the refrigerator. In this case, according to the British Food Standards Agency, potatoes should not be used primarily by people with diabetes or prediabetes. After such storage, the starch contained in it turns into sugar. When the product is baked or fried, it forms acrylamide, which increases the risk of cancer.
Germinated, has green spots. Sprouted potatoes should not be used, as many of the product's useful ingredients have already been lost. Green areas are a sign of high content of solanine, a toxic chemical compound that can lead to nausea, drowsiness, kidney infections, heart arrhythmia.
Uncleaned Another case when it cannot be used is with the skin. The potato peel should be peeled, as it concentrates a high content of solanine (especially during long-term storage). In addition, the vegetable is often sprayed with pesticides to protect it from pests.
With an unpleasant smell. A penetrating sweet and musty smell is a signal that the potatoes are spoiled. Good has a pleasant earthy smell.
Has wet spots. If the potato is wet in places, this is a sign that it is infected with fungi and bacteria (such as Erwina caratovora), experts warn. You can't eat it - only in the garbage can!
