Winter driving conditions are the harshest of all seasons. Low temperatures, heavy precipitation, and icy roads turn everyday trips into a quest, the main goal of which is not to reach your destination, but to stay safe and keep your car intact. It is especially difficult for novice drivers who do not yet have the necessary experience and skills in winter driving.
An experienced driving instructor pointed out the most common mistakes novice motorists make in winter. First of all, it is violating the speed limit and safe distance. What was normal and permissible on a summer road can be completely dangerous in winter.
The specialist drew attention to the fact that due to the increase in the braking distance on frozen tires on snow or ice in winter, drivers have much less time to react. The threats that provoke an emergency situation only increase during this period. The instructor recommends reducing speed and increasing the distance on the road so that in a critical situation the driver has 2-3 seconds to react.
Also, according to the expert, beginners forget to warm up the car in the winter, and this must be done not only to feel comfortable in the cabin, but also to bring both the engine and transmission to operating temperature. Otherwise, these two key elements will begin to wear out quickly and will soon fail.
