On hydrogen: the new BMW X5 will receive a “shared” engine with Toyota

The new BMW X5 will receive a “joint” engine with the Toyota concern. According to Autocar, the new BMW X5 will be available in gasoline, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen versions. The hydrogen power plant will appear in the range at the latest in 2028. The Bavarians are developing this modification together with Toyota engineers.

Unlike the “younger” BMW X3, there are no plans to transfer the “older” X5 to the Neue Klasse architecture. The fact is that the crossover wants to keep a full set of internal combustion engines that do not fit into the platform created primarily for electric vehicles. Another argument in favor of CLAR is the continuation of the BMW X5 assembly in the USA.

However, the electric BMW iX5 will not suffer from the bet on the internal combustion engine: the “battery” version is expected to receive sixth-generation electric drive components, the most modern “round” battery cells and an 800-volt electrical system. The flexibility of the CLAR system will come in handy for BMW, as the next generations of the X6 and X7 will be technically close to the X5.

At the start of sales, the top version will be the X5 M60, but in different markets this index will hide different powertrains. In Europe, the focus will be on a plug-in hybrid with a 3,0-liter “biturbo six”, while in the USA and the Middle East, a moderate hybrid with a 4,4-liter V8 engine will remain.
