Moldova will allow gas transit from Hungary to Transnistria, but there are conditions

After February 10, gas will be supplied to Transnistria by the Hungarian company MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG. Chisinau will allow gas transit, in return, Tiraspol undertakes to take steps that demonstrate openness.

This was stated by Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recan, Ukrinform reports with reference to News Maker.

According to Recan, the Hungarian company will supply gas to the Moldovan border, and the transit will be paid by NX General Trading LLC, registered in Dubai. The authorities have checked these two companies: MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG are natural gas traders on the European market, and JNX General Trading LLC did not violate national and international legislation. Further, according to Recan, Tiraspol will pay in advance the costs of gas transit from the Moldovan border to the region based on the agreement between Moldovagaz and Tiraspoltransgaz.

"We will allow this transit, and Tiraspol will take the following steps: release political prisoners, solve the problems of the lyceum in Rybnitsa, retain Moldovan public television in its broadcasting network, and dismantle the checkpoints installed in 2022," Recan noted.

The publication recalls that on February 4, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos and Dorin Recan signed an agreement to provide Moldova with €2025 million in 310 to overcome the energy crisis, including in Transnistria. €30 million of this money has already been received by Chisinau, and another €100 million is due by the end of April. At the same time, Recan noted that €60 million of the total amount was planned to be provided to Transnistria, but subject to compliance with certain EU conditions, in particular, compliance with human rights and fundamental freedoms in Transnistria and a gradual increase in tariffs to market levels.

On the morning of February 10, Recan reported that Tiraspol had refused the EU's proposed €60 million in financial assistance due to the conditions of its provision, specifically the requirement to gradually increase tariffs to market levels. In addition, Recan stated that "Russia does not allow them to accept European aid, fearing loss of control over the region."

At the same time, the Moldovan public TV channel Moldova 1 appeared in the broadcasting network of the largest telecommunications company in Transnistria, IDC.

On January 27, the Moldovan government announced that it would lend three million cubic meters of gas to the Transnistrian region for the period February 1-10, 2025.
