US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant to visit Ukraine
The purpose of the trip will be initial negotiations on US access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant will visit Ukraine this week as part of initial talks to secure US access to rare earth metals, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
Bessent will be the first official from Donald Trump's cabinet to visit Ukraine. The trip to Kyiv comes days after the US president said his administration was seeking a deal with Ukraine to provide access to resources in exchange for defense assistance from Russia.
Trump confirmed information about the Treasury Secretary's visit to Ukraine on his social network Truth Social.
"I am sending Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant to Ukraine to meet with President Zelensky. This war must and must end soon — too much death and destruction," the American leader wrote.
Ukraine has significant reserves of uranium and several critical minerals, including titanium, lithium, and graphite, which the government estimates could be worth trillions of dollars.
