US Department of Energy suspends firing of hundreds of nuclear safety officials - media

The US Department of Energy has suspended the layoffs of hundreds of employees who work at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a key agency that manages the country's nuclear weapons stockpile.

As Ukrinform reports, this was reported by ABC News, citing informed sources.

It is noted that on Friday morning, NNSA management held a meeting for all staff and announced that the Department of Energy had agreed to suspend their layoffs.

Also, managers at the National Nuclear Security Administration called back agency employees to let them know they were not being laid off at this time, despite some receiving emails and phone calls about the layoffs on Thursday.

In addition, their access badges have been reactivated and access to federal systems has been restored, at least temporarily.

Previously, hundreds of employees who were on probation at the agency were fired on Thursday evening.

The move raised concerns about the risk to national security, as the NNSA is responsible for, among other things, maintaining U.S. nuclear weapons, transporting them, and combating nuclear terrorism.
