Additional forces will be deployed in the border Mexican states of Baja California, Sonora and Tamaulipas, where the hottest areas of the border with high levels of illegal migration and drug and arms trafficking are located.
The plan to deploy 10 Mexican soldiers is part of an agreement announced on Monday between US and Mexican Presidents Donald Trump and Claudia Sheinbaum, according to which the US administration postponed the introduction of 25% tariffs on Mexican goods for one month.
The United States also pledged to increase efforts to stop the illegal flow of powerful weapons into Mexico from its territory.
Some analysts say that sending additional Mexican troops to the border with the United States, for which they were taken from other regions of the country, could leave some vulnerable areas of Mexico without adequate security.
Unlike the United States, Mexico does not have dedicated border patrols, as immigration officers are prohibited from carrying weapons, and Mexico relies on the military and the National Guard, which is subordinate to the country's Ministry of Defense, to protect its borders.
As part of the agreements, Mexico promised to send 10 National Guard troops to the US border as soon as possible to stop the flow of drugs, including fentanyl, into the United States.
Trump later confirmed on Truth Social that he had agreed to "immediately suspend" tariffs on Mexico for a month after a "very friendly" conversation with Sheinbaum.
