The billionaire warned federal employees about Trump's new policy.
Elon Musk, special adviser to President Trump, has warned federal employees about a new policy that requires them to provide detailed activity reports if they want to keep their jobs, The Hill writes.
"As directed by President @realDonaldTrump, all federal employees will soon be receiving emails asking them to report on what they did last week," Musk wrote in a Saturday afternoon post on X.
"Failure to respond will be considered dismissal," he added.
The billionaire did not provide any additional details on social media, but The Hill reviewed a copy of the message sent to federal officials.
"Please respond to this email with approximately five points about what you accomplished last week. Send a copy to your manager. Please do not send any confidential information, links, or attachments," the email said.
The deadline is set for Monday at 23:59 PM Standard Time.
Members of Congress say recent internal orders prohibit department employees from communicating with lawmakers or providing details of internal investigations to the Department of Government Efficiency.
The American Civil Service Union responded to Musk's tweet with a statement expressing disappointment.
“Once again, Elon Musk and the Trump administration have demonstrated their utter disregard for federal employees and the essential services they provide to the American people. It is cruel and disrespectful to hundreds of thousands of veterans of public service to have them justify their job responsibilities to this detached, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never honestly served an hour in public service in his life,” the group wrote.
The union added that it would challenge all illegal dismissals of its members and federal employees across the country.
Musk previously initiated a layoff program with “compensation.” Under its terms, employees can resign and receive their salaries until September 30. Unions criticized the program, calling it illegal, while the US Department of Justice said it was a “humane way out” for federal employees. The program has also been criticized for its lack of guarantees — employees who agreed to participate fear that they may not receive the promised salary.
