Sherry Johnson was picking out a coat for her mother when she remembered that secondhand items often have unexpected surprises. When she looked in the pockets, she was pleasantly surprised.
A resident of Kansas City, Missouri (USA), Sherry Johnson shared on Reddit an unusual find made during a trip to a second-hand store: she discovered $ 42 in the pocket of her coat. Her post instantly went viral and caused a heated discussion among thrift shopping enthusiasts.

Johnson, who regularly visits thrift stores in search of valuable finds, has encountered pleasant surprises more than once. She has previously come across a Tiffany crystal vase, a silver goblet and even a diamond earring. But the unexpected money in her coat pocket was a new experience for her.
"I was looking for a coat for my mom and remembered that many people find unexpected things in donated goods. When I checked my pockets, I came across some used napkins, and then something that looked like paper. And there it was - money," the American said.
The story sparked a lively discussion on the r/ThriftStoreHauls subreddit, with users sharing their stories: some found money in books, others in jeans pockets, and even in trash cans. Some, however, admitted that their finds were much less pleasant: used tissues and COVID masks.
Johnson admitted that she initially doubted whether she should keep the money she found, but ultimately decided to keep it for herself.
"The store I was in is commercial, and unsold items are just thrown away," she explained.
