European leaders intend to unite to confront the Russian threat.
Keir Starmer is set to join a European crisis summit to confront the threat from Russia after the US banned European leaders from participating in peace talks with Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
This is reported by the Independent.
France is preparing to hold an informal meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte after comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the continent should form an “army of Europe” because it cannot rely on the United States for defense.
Starmer said: “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for our national security as we come to terms with the reality of today’s world and the threat we face from Russia. It is clear that Europe must take a more active role in NATO as we work with the United States to secure the future of Ukraine and to counter the threat we face from Russia. The UK will work to ensure that we keep the US and Europe united. We cannot allow any divisions in the alliance to distract from the external enemies we face.”
Next week, Starmer will travel to Washington to meet with Donald Trump, where they will discuss, among other things, issues related to the war in Ukraine.
As a reminder, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, amid statements from Washington regarding the impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO, emphasized that London will continue to support Kyiv's membership in the Alliance.
