As Ukrinform's own correspondent in New York reports, 58 countries became the authors of the collective project, which, in particular, calls on Russia to "immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."
These include all EU states, including Hungary and Slovakia, the vast majority of other European countries, including the United Kingdom, Moldova, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, as well as Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Liberia, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau and others.
According to the Washington Post, the US administration asked Ukraine to withdraw a collective project initiated by Ukraine condemning the Russian war, but was refused, as the American version was perceived in Kyiv as "close to a pro-Russian" position and as an attempt to limit any responsibility of Moscow for the invasion.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement on Friday saying that Washington had "proposed a simple, historic resolution at the UN" and called on "all member states to support it in order to pave the way for peace."
"By supporting this resolution, we reaffirm that this conflict is terrible, that the UN can help end it, and that peace is possible. We firmly believe that now is the time to commit to ending the war," the statement said.
As Ukrinform reported, the United States proposed its draft resolution to the UN General Assembly on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which differs significantly from the version supported by more than fifty countries.
On Monday, February 24, an extraordinary special session will be held to mark the third anniversary of the Russian war against Ukraine, at which the adoption of a corresponding resolution is expected.
Also this afternoon, the UN Security Council will discuss the situation in Ukraine in connection with the Russian aggression.
