It turns out that there are no crops in the garden that pruning and removing excess growth could harm. The same applies to cabbage. Experienced gardeners told us why they actually cut off the lower leaves of cabbage and when it is really necessary.
A few moves with the pruner - and you can stop worrying about diseases of this crop and generally ease the burden of caring for white cabbage.
But there is another opinion.
You can often hear that the lower part of the leaves is the most valuable, they say, it is responsible for photosynthesis and its removal can cause trouble.
In addition, leaves are responsible for thermoregulation and protect against pathogenic microorganisms and other parasites.
To trim or not
- These leaves are cut off if the lower part of the fork begins to rot. Along with them, all dying parts are removed;
- In addition, leaves are removed when they prevent moisture from reaching the root system and interfere with hilling;
- When the head of corn enters the ripening stage, the leaves that are spreading on the ground are removed to protect against fungal diseases;
- Without hesitation, they remove the shoots affected by pests.
Pruning is contraindicated
Before the ovary appears, there cannot be less than seven leaves in the rosette. Green and healthy leaves do not need to be touched at all, especially in mid- and late-ripening varieties.
Do not remove the tough green leaves even after harvesting the cabbage.
How to cut
- First, the procedure is performed on a “dry” day and the leaves are not broken off, but cut with clean garden tools;
- Secondly, the cut site must be powdered with wood ash;
- Thirdly, you can cut no more than one leaf within seven days.
