British Prime Minister attended EU summit
London and Brussels will discuss the structure and format of enhanced security cooperation and other topics at a joint defense summit in the United Kingdom in May.
It is indicated that the British Prime Minister from the Labour Party was officially invited to the official meeting by the Chairman of the European Council of Heads of State and Government of the EU Member States, António Costa.
According to a Downing Street statement, the British Prime Minister "delightedly accepted" the invitation.
At a meeting of EU heads of state and government in Brussels, the British Prime Minister announced his intention to establish cooperation on defense issues.
"We want to create an ambitious security partnership between the UK and the EU to support NATO," Starmer said during a meeting with European politicians.
The event was a preparatory stage for the May EU-UK summit, which is expected to give a new impetus to relations between the parties. It is known that it will be held in Britain.
The United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January 2020, following a referendum on the UK's EU membership held in 2016 by the then Conservative Party government, in which 51,89% of participants voted to leave the European Union. At the end of an 11-month transition period following the withdrawal, the UK also left the EU's customs union and its single internal market.
