Britain could become a "bridge" between Trump and Europe - FT

Donald Trump is threatening to impose tariffs on European goods and has also called on Europe to take responsibility for security on the continent.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to normalize relations between the United States and Europe amid deepening transatlantic tensions over Ukraine and trade, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, February 16.

According to the publication, Starmer will take part in a summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, where politicians plan to discuss, among other things, the role of Europe and the United States in ending the war in Ukraine.

"The meeting in Paris is expected to discuss the possible deployment of peacekeeping forces to be stationed behind the future ceasefire line," the publication indicates.

In addition, Starmer plans to travel to Washington at the end of February to persuade Trump to allow European countries to be involved in negotiations on Ukraine. The politician also plans to persuade Trump not to impose tariffs against European countries.

"The UK will work to keep the US and Europe united. We cannot allow any divisions in the alliance to distract from the enemies we face," Starmer said.

After returning from Washington, the British Prime Minister plans to meet with other European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In addition, Starmer promised to find a way to increase UK defense spending from 2,3% to 2,5% of GDP.
