Ukraine must receive reliable security guarantees from the West, otherwise the war may end in favor of Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a column for the Daily Mail.
In particular, he emphasizes that now is the moment when the West must demonstrate its determination and “shock Putin with willpower.” According to Johnson, it is US President Donald Trump who is capable of doing this, because he has the necessary courage to confront Putin.
At the same time, Johnson emphasized that no territorial concessions will stop the war. After all, the point is not only that the transfer of Ukrainian land to the aggressor is fundamentally unacceptable, but also that this conflict is not reduced solely to the issue of territories. According to him, the main thing is the future of Ukraine: whether it will become a full-fledged part of the West or will it again fall under the control of the Kremlin.
“If we do not decide the fate of Ukraine as part of the West, protected by Western security guarantees, Putin will be assured of triumph. He will keep what he has and will use his position to destabilize and attack Ukraine by any means necessary until the government in Kyiv falls, civil war breaks out, and the entire country returns to his orbit,” the politician emphasized.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that the Kremlin will try to impose on Ukrainians the idea that the West has abandoned them, and this is exactly what China seeks. In his opinion, this cannot be allowed.
Johnson believes that to change the situation, the West must remove bureaucratic barriers that slow down the supply of weapons. He also supports the idea of compensating the US for its support for Ukraine. In his opinion, this could be a deal on the extraction of rare metals or the use of $ 300 billion in frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine.
In addition, Europe must be ready to defend Ukraine after the ceasefire, clearly realizing that it is on an irreversible path to EU and NATO membership.
“This war will only end when Putin understands: Ukraine will never return to his control,” Johnson concluded.
