Audi changes approach to model names

Audi will start naming its models in a new way. Initially, the German automaker intended to give only even indices to cars with electric powertrains, and odd indices to those equipped with internal combustion engines (including hybrids). But this naming system will no longer be used. From now on, the numerical sequence from 1 to 8 will indicate the size of the model and its positioning in the lineup.

Previously, in accordance with the previous scheme, the Audi A4 was renamed the A5, and the Audi A6 was renamed the A7. It was assumed that this would make it easier for buyers to identify the battery cars, but it turned out the opposite: dealers and customers said that this naming logic only confused them.

Audi management took into account the feedback and decided to return to the system that was used before - the cars will receive numbers from 1 to 8 in ascending order from the "junior" model to the flagship. At the same time, the company will not return the previous names A4 and A5, but there will be changes for the A6 and A7: models with internal combustion engines will return the name Audi A6 with the designation TFSI for gasoline and TDI for diesel modifications, and electric cars will be supplemented with the prefix e-tron.
