The Historical Automobile Club has identified the oldest (currently known) photo of a car in Ukraine. As reported by the AC Garage News Telegram channel, it depicts the first car in Mykolaiv, the Benz Velo, which appeared in 1896. Autoconsulting writes about this.
It was the Velo model that became the world's first mass-produced car, and a model numbered 437 arrived in Mykolaiv. For a long time, this Benz Velo was the only car in the city, but it was unlucky and in 1902 it was damaged in a fire in the garage where it was stored.
Interestingly, the first car in Mykolaiv appeared even earlier than in Kyiv and Lviv (1897), and only Odesa was ahead.
Until now, the oldest photo of a car in Ukraine was considered to be a photo of the Daimler Phoenix of the Baron von Meck family, taken in the Kyiv region in 1898-99. But it seems that the Mykolaiv Benz Velo is older than the von Mecks' Daimler. And so far, this is the oldest car whose photo has survived to this day.
