The Russian Federation is using Soviet-era blanks from the shops of the Kazan Aircraft Plant to create "new" bombers.

The Russian Federation currently does not have the ability to manufacture new Tu-160 and Tu-22M3 bombers "from scratch." However, the Russians are using Soviet-era blanks. This was reported by the specialized portal Defense Express on Monday, January 20.

Now, to create formally "new" bombers, the Russian Federation is using Soviet-era blanks that have been sitting in the workshops of the Kazan Aircraft Plant (KAPO) for decades.

In 2022-2023, Russia made three Tu-160 bombers from these blanks, which were designated Tu-160M. By February 2022, one operational Tu-160 was “stuck” at the Kazan Aircraft Plant, which was also modernized.

Today it is known that the Russians want to put all four Tu-160Ms into service in 2025, previously this was planned for 2023. One of the reasons for the postponement is difficulties with engines and onboard radio-electronic equipment.

The situation with the Tu-22M3 is worse, as six fuselages of these aircraft were spotted at the KAPO site by February 2022, the publication claims. The first such aircraft was rolled out by the Russians in 2018, and the second in 2023.
