The National Antarctic Science Center (NASC) has published a video that tells about the work and life at the Academician Vernadsky Station of Tetyana Baglai, a Ukrainian biologist from the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition (UAE).

RegioNews reports about it press service NANTS is on Facebook.

A day in the life of a polar explorer in Antarctica

"Watch the wonderful video from Radio France Internationale (RFI) in Ukrainian about the biologist of the 29th UAE, Tetyana Baglai," the National Academy of Sciences emphasized.

After watching the story, Ukrainians are invited to find out:

  • in what conditions do polar explorers and polar explorers live?
  • why they write on the board every time they go outside the station;
  • in which era does “Academician Vernadsky” live?
  • Why do polar explorers turn off the boat's engine when an animal approaches?

What you should know about the Ukrainian Antarctic station

The Ukrainian Antarctic Station "Akademik Vernadsky" is located on Galindez Island in the Argentine Islands archipelago (West Antarctica).

The British established a scientific base on these islands (during the expedition to Graham Land in 1934-1937).

As a permanent meteorological observatory, the base began operating on Winter Island in 1947, and in 1954 the station was moved to Cape Marina on Galindez Island.

The transfer of the Great Britain station (then called "Faraday") to Ukraine was a gesture of goodwill by the British government, because after the collapse of the USSR, the Russian Federation declared itself its successor and refused the request of our authorities to transfer one of the five (operating at that time) Antarctic stations to Ukraine.

The process of transferring the station from the British to Ukraine lasted from 1994 to February 1996. In the process, it received its modern name - "Academician Vernadsky".

Rumor has it that during the farewell to the British expedition, the Ukrainians "bought" the station for a symbolic fee of 1 pound sterling.

The main purpose of the station and the National Antarctic Science Center (which is the national operator of Ukraine in Antarctica) is to conduct scientific research on the sixth continent.

The Akademik Vernadsky Station is a system with its own infrastructure (which ensures its functioning throughout the year - it allows 12-14 polar explorers to work all year round).
