Many of us are sleep deprived. But there are also those who sleep, on the contrary, too much. And such a state is called oversleeping or hypersomnia.
With oversleeping (hypersomnia), people complain of very strong daytime sleepiness, and it occurs regularly or often. And a person sleeps for 10 or more hours.
According to Marishka Brown, a sleep expert from the US National Institutes of Health, healthy sleep consists of three aspects. This is the amount of sleep, its quality and a constant sleep schedule. If you sleep more than 9 hours a day and do not feel rested, then there is some medical problem that leads to this condition.
In general, the need for sleep in different people can be different depending on their age, diseases, stress or level of physical activity. Experts from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine say that schoolchildren need to sleep 9 hours a day, teenagers - 8-10 hours.
Adults may need 7 or more hours. There are also adults who need more sleep than the rest: 10-12 hours. And this is not because they have health problems, but simply because of their natural biological predisposition.
You may need more sleep than usual for a number of reasons. This is an increase in the amount of physical activity, a change in time zones, stress, the period during surgery or illness and after them. The article, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, also notes that getting more sleep after vaccination can improve antibody production and the overall immune response.
Oversleeping can also cause mental illnesses. For example, some kind of trauma or depression.
Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy lead to oversleeping.
Recent scientific studies show that there is a link between low vitamin B levels and overeating. And too much sleep is associated with the abuse of psychoactive substances. If a person is obese or has some chronic diseases, this can also contribute to oversleeping.
Finally, an overdose can be caused by withdrawal of medication or by taking certain medications.
