A groundbreaking project combining solar power generation and storage has been unveiled in the United Arab Emirates. It was unveiled as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. It is expected to generate 1 GW of electricity XNUMX/XNUMX.

According to representatives of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), which are participating in the project, this will be the world's first gigascale project combining 24/7 solar panels and an energy storage system, Interesting Engineering reports.

The know-how is being implemented in Abu Dhabi. The project includes a 5,2 GW (DC) solar photovoltaic installation and a 19 GWh battery storage system. This will set a new global standard in the field of clean energy.

“The system will provide up to 1 GW of baseload power generated from renewable sources daily and will become the world's largest combined solar and storage energy system,” the publication said.

As noted by EWEC CEO Osman Al Ali, by launching the world's largest solar generation and energy storage system, Abu Dhabi is setting a new global standard for sustainable development and innovation in energy.

“This landmark project reflects EWEC’s continued commitment to decarbonizing the energy sector and supporting the UAE’s socio-economic development. The facility will be at the heart of the country’s clean energy transition, providing reliable and sustainable energy solutions for key industries such as artificial intelligence and advanced technologies,” he added.

As noted, the solar installation with an energy storage system will provide high stability and efficiency, solving the problems of intermittent renewable sources. The 19 GWh battery storage system will allow solar energy to be integrated into the grid without interruption.

He emphasized that Masdar, EWEC and their partners are setting a new global standard for technological innovation aimed at solving the problem of intermittency of renewable energy sources and providing 1 GW of clean energy 24 hours a day, without interruption.

The launch of the project was announced in the presence of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

China wants to build a giant solar power plant in space

China has announced plans to build a massive 1-kilometer-wide solar power plant in space that will continuously beam energy back to Earth using microwaves. The ambitious project is already being compared to China's Three Gorges Dam, which is located on the Yangtze River in central China and is the world's largest hydroelectric project. It produces 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
