President of the United States Donald Trump After his inauguration, he called Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and demanded that she sell Greenland.

RBC-Ukraine writes about the details of the conversation with reference to FT.

The US president held a 45-minute conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last week. The White House has not made any official statements about the conversation, but Frederiksen said she made it clear that Greenland, as an autonomous part of Denmark, is not for sale, although she noted the US's "great interest" in the island.

Five current and former senior European officials briefed on the conversation said that “the conversation went very badly.”

They noted that Trump was aggressive and confrontational after comments by the Danish prime minister, who said the island was not for sale, despite her proposal to expand cooperation on military bases and mineral extraction.

The publication notes that the details of this conversation are likely to increase European concerns that Trump's return to power could further strain transatlantic ties, as the US president could pressure allies to abandon territorial claims.

“It was a very tough conversation. He threatened specific measures against Denmark, such as targeted tariffs,” added one former Danish official.

In December 2024 Donald Trump declared that “possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” Trump threatens to take away the Panama Canal and buy Greenland for U.S. national security reasons. He has expressed interest in buying the island since his first term. Trump has refused to rule out the possibility of using military action to control Greenland.

After Trump's statement, Denmark decided to significantly increase defense spending for Greenland and also changed the royal coat of arms.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lukke Rasmussen has dismissed the possibility of Greenland becoming a subject of the United States. However, Denmark is not going to sell anything and does not need the money.
