A powerful earthquake of magnitude 5,2 struck Japan's Fukushima Prefecture

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5,2 struck Fukushima Prefecture and surrounding areas in northeastern Japan on Thursday morning.

This is reported by Kyodo News, Ukrinform reports.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which the Japan Meteorological Agency registered at around 2:50 a.m., was at a depth of four kilometers.

In other parts of Fukushima Prefecture and neighboring Tochigi, Gunma and Niigata, weaker tremors of magnitude 3 were recorded.

Meteorologists also reported no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates the two nuclear power plants, Fukushima-1 and Fukushima-2, stated that no anomalies were detected at both facilities, and that the readings at the radiation level monitoring posts around the nuclear power plant did not record any changes in the radiation background.

Local police and rescue services said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage after the earthquake. Their experts are currently surveying the area and settlements where the tremor was strongest.
