The Hungarian side blocked the statement of the European Union countries on the non-recognition of the presidential elections in Belarus.

As Radio Liberty writes, citing its own sources in Brussels, it is precisely because of this that the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, and the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Cos, were forced to issue a statement on their own behalf.

The statement says that the electoral process in Belarus was deprived of any legitimacy due to unprecedented repression of human rights, as well as restrictions on political participation and access to independent media:

“Democracy requires free, fair and transparent elections, held in a society where human rights prevail, without restrictions on freedom of assembly and speech, and where pluralistic media can operate freely. This is not the case in Belarus.”
