The U4U program for Ukrainian refugees has been frozen in the US
Applications are currently on hold until USCIS has reviewed all requests that have already been submitted.
The United States has announced the suspension of a program for Ukrainian citizens who are traveling to the United States due to the large-scale aggression of the Russian Federation. This is the United for Ukraine (U4U) program. This was reported by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
It is noted that “the acceptance of Form I-134A, the online request for support, and the declaration of financial support are suspended.” This is explained by the January 20 executive order “Securing Our Borders.”
Applications are currently on hold until USCIS has reviewed all requests that have already been submitted.
According to media reports, as of March 2023, over 4 Ukrainian citizens had arrived in the United States under the U118U program. In addition, about 25 more Ukrainians entered the United States at the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion in 2022, crossing the border into the United States from Mexico.
According to Voice of America, the number of immigrants in the United States over the past few years is “a record in history.” It currently “surpasses the great immigration boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
As you know, the United for Ukraine (U4U) program allows citizens of Ukraine and their immediate family members who are outside the United States to come to the United States and temporarily stay in the country for 2 years. Ukrainians participating in the U4U program must have a sponsor in the United States who agrees to provide them with financial support during their stay in the United States. The first step in the United for Ukraine process is for the sponsor from the United States to submit an application on Form I-134A, “Online Application for Participation in the Program as a Sponsor and Declaration of Financial Support,” to USCIS. The US government will then verify the sponsor to ensure that he or she is able to financially support the person he or she agrees to sponsor.
