Russia is creating separate units of unmanned systems to strengthen its army, and this is a big challenge for us.
This was stated by the executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, Dmytro Zhmaylo, during a telethon.
"The Russians are literally catching up with us in such decisions. They make them mostly en masse. Sometimes we talk about some kind of advantage - then we are not talking about an actual advantage, whether in drones or in artillery fire, but we are talking about narrowing the gap," Zhmaylo said.
At the same time, he gave the example that the Russians have always had at least twice as many FPV drones, but, he noted, we know how to use them more skillfully.
"It concerned the creation of territorial defense - the Russians did it after us. The use of the same Gerber drones - those plywood ones with Luneberg lenses, which look like "shaheeds" on air defense screens. They are catching up with us in this," Zhmaylo said.
According to him, the Russians are now convinced that it will be a long time before we can learn to fight their fiber-optic drones, which connect the operator to the drone itself via cable and are resistant to electronic warfare, so they have time to create new units.
Zhmaylo added that the Russian army has already created groups of FPV drone operators, including fiber-optic ones, in each unit.
"Most likely, they now want to build a single structure. This will not affect the nature of the fighting, but the deployment of the staffs themselves, the replenishment of people may take from 3 to 4 months. And this, accordingly, is in our favor. But globally for the Defense Forces, this definitely does not change anything. But the Russians have an ambition: to catch up with us and try to overwhelm us not only with mass, but also with high technology," said Zhmaylo.
