During his first term as president, Trump visited Beijing in 2017, after almost a year in the White House, and this time he expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office.
Currently, a decision on the new American leader's visit to Beijing has not yet been made, and Trump's transition team did not respond to the publication's request for comment.
WSJ sources in the Chinese government said that Trump and Xi, through their representatives, discussed a personal meeting, with one option being for the new American president to invite the Chinese leader to the United States.
In addition to the trip to China, the elected American leader discussed with his advisers the possibility of a visit to India, where he last visited in 2020.
During his first presidential term (2017-2021), Trump effectively unleashed a trade war with China, seeking to eliminate a large trade imbalance in favor of China. Then, the Trump administration resorted to pressure on Beijing and its comprehensive containment, introducing tariffs on $370 billion worth of Chinese goods, but this did not lead to the elimination of the imbalance.
