The so-called shadow fleet helps Moscow circumvent sanctions and earn from oil products.
In fact, according to the spokesman of the Navy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Dmytro Pletenchuk, some of the tankers that transport oil products are related to merchants from third countries.
"The definition of "shadow fleet", according to many experts, is not correct. I agree with them, because he is conditionally "shadowy". All of them are in the international legal field. And there are many nuances here - starting with the insurance market and ending with those who benefit from these transportations, which are in the legal field of civilized countries," Pletenchuk emphasized on Espresso.
He explained that there are ships that, for example, belong to the Russian Federation. They fly under the flag of the Russian Federation and belong to Russian companies or state enterprises in general. In particular, this concerns the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers, which on December 15, 2024, had an accident in the Black Sea, causing a large-scale environmental disaster.
"And many tankers that participate in transshipments, that help the Russians earn money, that even sometimes help the Russians circumvent sanctions, have owners in third countries. And in quite civilized countries, actually. Because the flag under which they walk is not the main deciding factor. There are owners, as well as final beneficiaries who receive this oil," the military officer emphasized.
