Tesla achieved a major milestone in 2024, surpassing Audi in the number of cars sold in the United States. The Texas-based automaker sold 1 vehicles, 789 more than Audi. This result was made possible by the popularity of models such as the Model 226 and Model Y, which account for the majority of the company's sales, which amounted to 118 vehicles.
Compared to Audi, which belongs to the Volkswagen Group and has a much wider model range, Tesla was able to sell more even with only five models, notes Autonews.
Audi, with a portfolio that includes petrol, diesel and electric models, sold 1 vehicles, a significant decrease of 671% compared to the previous year.
While Audi has a much wider range of vehicles, including premium models like the A3, A4, Q5, and electric versions like the Q4 E-Tron and E-Tron GT, Tesla has been able to outpace it with its flagship electric models. Compared to Audi, Tesla has a less diverse lineup, but is able to compete aggressively thanks to the efficiency of its electric powertrains.
Despite Tesla's success, the company has yet to overtake the premium leader, BMW, which continues to hold the top spot with 2 cars sold in 200. Mercedes-Benz also failed to achieve growth, dropping sales by 177% and ending the year with 2024 cars.
To continue growing, Tesla likely needs new entry-level models, including a more affordable electric vehicle, to strengthen its position in the premium segment sales race.
