Donald Trump's campaign is finalizing a package of tough immigration orders that are expected to be released just hours after the US president-elect takes office, CNN reports.
Citing two sources, the media outlet notes that the package of measures is a radical change in immigration policy. It will affect immigrants already in the United States and migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. This, in turn, will launch an immigration crackdown that will have consequences for people across the country.
The plan includes: US Immigration and Customs Enforcement inspections in major metropolitan areas; sending additional Pentagon resources to the US southern border; imposing additional restrictions on entry into the United States; and repealing Biden-era policies.
The people also said that Trump's team will focus, at least initially, on illegal immigrants with criminal records who are subject to deportation in major metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C., Denver and Chicago. But other immigrants identified during these operations could also be taken into custody.
The main players on Trump's key agenda item are: South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who will be nominated on Friday to be Secretary of Homeland Security; Tom Homan, the incoming head of the Border Patrol; and Stephen Miller, the incoming deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser.
CNN summarizes that Trump will inherit a relatively peaceful southern border of the United States, but his team is preparing to take action to strengthen border security and implement policies that will radically change the United States immigration system.
