The second canceled game is an untitled project from Day's Gone developer Bend Studio. This was reported by reputable insider Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, reports 24 Channel.

Despite the cancellation, none of the studios will be closed:

Bend and Bluepoint are highly skilled teams that are valued members of the PlayStation Studios family, and we work closely with each studio to determine what their next projects will be,
– said a statement from a Sony spokesperson.

It is known that both games were supposed to be live services, that is, long-term projects with microtransactions, seasons, constant updates and additions, events, etc.

It is currently unclear whether this will result in job cuts, but the company says it plans to "do everything possible to ensure the impact on the business is minimal."

The reason for abandoning further development is unknown. Sony previously received critical acclaim for Helldivers 2, which was played by millions, but suffered a setback last year with the shocking failure of online first-person shooter Concord, which led to the closure of developer Firewalk Studios. So it's entirely possible that the decision was related to that sad fact.

On the other hand, less than a year ago, before the Concord debacle, PlayStation laid off 900 employees at studios like Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, and Guerrilla Games, as well as canceling several unannounced projects. So this could be part of a general process of downsizing and streamlining the business.

Nothing more has been announced about the canceled games at this time, but it's likely we'll learn more in the coming weeks.

  1. Bend Studio's last game was 2019's Days Gone, which was met with mixed reviews from critics.
  2. PlayStation acquired Bluepoint in September 2021, almost a year after the release of its last game, the Demon's Souls remake for PS5. The studio hasn't released anything since then, although it did provide support during the development of God of War Ragnarok.
  3. Last June, Bluepoint president Marco Thrash said that the studio, which was best known for its work on remakes and remasters, was committed to working on original content in the future.
