On January 15, South Korean investigators entered the presidential residence to detain impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, Yonhap and 24.kg reported.
Law enforcement officers and investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) and the National Investigation Agency (NOI) reportedly used ladders to break through the second bus line and detain President Yoon Suk-yeol for his declaration of martial law.
Earlier, when South Korean authorities were preparing to make a second attempt to arrest President Yoon Suk-yeol, he ignored a summons for questioning and barricaded himself in his villa.
After a long standoff at the presidential residence, this time investigators were able to deliver Yoon Suk Yool to the Bureau of Corruption Investigation.
The current head of state previously released a short video in which he stated that, as before, he considered the arrest illegal, but decided to obey the investigators and the police in order to avoid bloodshed.
It is worth noting that the wife of the President of South Korea, Kim Kyung-hee, is suspected of corruption, in particular, in receiving expensive gifts, which is prohibited by South Korean law. The scandal surrounding the first lady intensified after the release of a video in which Kim Kyung-hee receives a luxurious Dior bag worth over 3 million won (about 100 thousand UAH).
Kim Kyung-hee kept the luxury accessory for herself, while her husband decided to cover up this shameful act and got into a scandal. Instead of firing the prosecutors who did not start an investigation into the incident, he decided to declare martial law in the country. He also said something about preventing North Korean elements from trying to “deprive citizens of freedom and happiness.”
Both the ruling party and the opposition opposed the introduction of martial law. The aforementioned Lee Jae-myung declared that martial law was unconstitutional, while former head of the presidential party, Han Dong-hoon, called it a “wrong” move and promised to block it.
It should be noted that under South Korean law, martial law is declared in the event of a military threat or when civilian authorities are unable to function. President Yoon emphasized the latter, referring to Article 77 of the constitution, which allows martial law to be declared “to maintain public safety.”
Yoon Suk-yeol has been removed from office since December 14, but in order to remove him from office, the impeachment must be approved by the Constitutional Court. Until the court makes a decision, he officially remains president.
