Last spring, Mazda showed the Arata concept, which many consider a harbinger of the new, third generation CX-5 crossover.

What is known about the novelty

The most popular car in the Hiroshima-based automaker's lineup is set to be unveiled in the coming years, and if rumors are to be believed, it will feature something special that will make the car unrecognizable from its predecessor.

Sources from the reputable Japanese portal "BestCarWeb" report that the third generation CX-5 will become a powerful hybrid. Moreover, this time such a power plant for the car will be developed by Mazda engineers themselves (in some markets the company currently uses a hybrid from Toyota).

This isn't a conventional hybrid, but an innovative one. Simple hybrid powertrains use an electric motor and a power management unit that are attached separately to the vehicle's powertrain components and connected together by a three-phase cable. However, Mazda has come up with something different.

The patent application states that the power control device will be placed directly on the engine housing, which will reduce the overall weight of the body, noise levels, as well as the cost of installing the system and three-phase cable.

It is claimed that measures were taken in the design of the power plant to protect the power control device from engine heating and from vibrations.

The new CX-5 is expected to arrive in 2025, but the version with an innovative hybrid powertrain will debut a little later – approximately in 2026.
