The US Senate, during a final vote on Friday, approved the candidacy of former Fox TV host Pete Hegseth for the position of United States Secretary of Defense.

Since the same number of senators voted "for" and "against", it was necessary to involve the US Vice President, whose vote is decisive in such cases, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"According to the results of this vote, 50 voted "yes", "no" - also 50, the Senate is divided evenly. The Vice President votes "yes", and the candidacy is confirmed," said Vice President J.D. Vance, who is also formally considered the speaker of the upper house of the US Congress, from the podium.

Pete Hegseth's candidacy was not supported by three Republican senators: Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and former Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Before the primary vote, Democrats opposed the proposed candidacy throughout Friday, pointing to Hegseth's absolute professional unqualification, as well as his misconduct and allegations of violence against him.
