Iran and Russia have signed a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement,” which covers, in particular, the defense sector, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

The document was signed in the Kremlin following talks between the presidents of the two countries, Masoud Pezeshkian and Vladimir Putin. The agreement reportedly establishes the countries' status as "strategic partners" and defines "a legal framework for the further development of cooperation in the long term."

According to Iranian and Russian officials, the agreement covers all areas, including military, energy, financial, scientific, etc.

According to Reuters, during a meeting with Putin, the Iranian president said that their countries could agree on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Iran. However, it is not specified whether this refers to the completion of the already partially commissioned Bushehr nuclear power plant or a new facility.

Strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea

As I wrote, in the summer of 2024, during Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang, a strategic partnership agreement was signed between the Russian Federation and the DPRK. When the text of this agreement appeared, it became clear that it was actually about concluding a direct military alliance.

After that, in the fall, the DPRK sent thousands of its soldiers to the Kursk region, where they later engaged in direct battles with the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Although there are fears that after concluding a similar agreement with the Russian Federation, Iran will also direct its troops to the Russian-Ukrainian front, Deputy Director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies Sergey Danilov considers this option unlikely. He notes that the situation with Iran is completely different from that with the DPRK.
