As reported by Ukrinform, Radio Liberty reports this.
The agreement was signed in Moscow on Friday by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Massoud Pazeshkian.
Putin called it a “breakthrough” and mentioned his intention to bring relations with Iran “to a qualitatively new level.” Pezeshkian said that the agreement signed with Russia “opens a new chapter” in the countries’ bilateral relations, especially in trade. According to him, the agreement “will contribute to the settlement of the conflict in the Middle East.”
Russia and Iran have previously joined forces to support the Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December after an opposition offensive.
Pezeshkian's visit to Russia comes three days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that the agreement with Iran has been in the works for years. In early 2022, it was at the “final stage.”
The new bilateral agreement was to replace a 20-year strategic treaty signed by the countries in 2001 and extended in 2020.
