The analytical resource Global Firepower has published a ranking of the world's strongest armies for 2025, which consists of 60 different parameters, including the number of troops. According to the analysts' research, Ukraine is in sixth place on the list of the largest armies in the world.
Global Firepower has published a ranking of active military forces by country, which reflects the number of all personnel who have an “active duty status” and can be ready for combat at any time.
According to this ranking, China has the largest army in the world - 2,035 million people. India is considered the second largest in the ranking of the world's armies - 1,455 million soldiers. The top three are closed by the USA - 1,328 million people. Russia, together with North Korea, shares the 4th and 5th places of the world's armies in terms of strength - 1,320 million soldiers each. These are the only five countries that have a personnel strength of more than a million people.
According to Global Firepower, Ukraine ranks sixth in the world in terms of the size of its army – 900 people. Similar figures were also announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky in January 2025. According to him, the Ukrainian army has 880 military personnel, while the Russian contingent on the territory of Ukraine is about 600 soldiers.

Thus, the Ukrainian army is the largest in Europe. The next largest army in Europe after Ukraine is the Polish army with 202,1 soldiers – 25th place in the ranking of the largest armies in the world. France is in 26th place – 200, Great Britain is in 30th place – 184,86, and Germany is right behind it with 181,6 soldiers.
According to Global Firepower, the world's smallest army is Luxembourg, with 1000 active military personnel. In addition, three other countries have no active military personnel: Afghanistan, Panama, and Iceland.
