Israeli President Says There's a Chance to Change Course in the Middle East

Recent developments in the Middle East offer an opportunity to change course in the region, while relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which are “key to regional stability,” have a chance of normalization.

This was stated by Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog at the World Economic Forum in Davos, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Let’s be frank, there is a real dialogue between Israel and Saudi Arabia, between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Saudi Arabia is a very important country in the region and, of course, is the center of Islam. And I think that this (normalization — ed.) needs to be moved forward. I say this openly… I think that there is an opportunity now to move forward on the details or the conditions,” Herzog said.

The Israeli president called Saudi Arabia “the key to regional stability.”

He also stated that there is now a huge opportunity to change course in the Middle East, particularly after the changes in Syria and Libya.

“There is an opportunity now, a huge opportunity, to change the course of the Middle East for the better, but there is also a huge risk to that as long as this regime in Iran remains in place and continues its efforts,” Herzog said.

In his opinion, Iran remains the greatest source of danger and is involved in all conflicts and proxy conflicts in the region, therefore it must be weakened.

“Of course, one thing must be absolutely clear: Iran cannot have a nuclear capability. Second, Iran must stop with its proxies. This is the axis of evil that has caused such immense pain,” the Israeli politician emphasized.
