The New South Wales Fire Service in Australia is testing the new Volvo FM Electric. The Volvo FM Electric has been loaned for an extended test drive to understand how low and zero emission vehicles can be integrated into emergency services fleets in the future.

The trial saw the electric truck cover a 550km route from the service’s logistics headquarters in Glendenning, New Wales, to the border town of Albury, loaded with a water tanker. The truck and trailer arrived just in time to be displayed at the NSW RFS Championships in the suburb of Turguna.

The truck was driven by a two-man team, who shared driving duties on the route to evaluate the performance of the Volvo FM Electric.

The truck averaged 88,7 km/h with an energy consumption of 1,24 kWh/km — a figure comparable to the Tesla Semi, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims uses 2 kWh of energy per mile. The electric Volvo needed less than 550 hours to charge to cover a distance of 2 km.
