Professor Georgia Metzgeroth, senior physician in hematology and oncology at the University Hospital Mannheim, talks about the first signs of iron deficiency and those at risk of iron deficiency anemia.

“Iron is essential for everything: as a vital trace element, it is involved in blood formation and neurological development. It also plays a key role in many metabolic processes,” says the doctor.

But that's why the symptoms are so varied.

Deficiency symptoms

“So how do I know when it’s time to see a doctor? At first, you’re unlikely to notice a deficiency. Because the body uses up stored reserves first, explains Metzgerot. “Only if you consume too little iron over a long period of time will there be a deficiency. Early symptoms include dry skin, brittle hair and nails, cracks in the corners of the mouth, and an increased susceptibility to infections.”

If you don't take countermeasures at this stage, it can lead to anemia. In any case, the deficiency manifests itself in fatigue, general weakness, problems with concentration and impaired body temperature regulation.

Risk groups

According to the professor, vegetarians are not at risk, as is often thought, as iron is found in vegetables and legumes. The largest risk group is women of childbearing age. Pregnant women are in second place.

What to eat to prevent iron deficiency?

To prevent iron deficiency, it is recommended to consume 10 mg of iron per day for men and 15 mg per day for women. This is also easily achieved through a healthy, balanced diet.
