Food prices have become a major issue in the 2024 election, and Trump often spoke out against their rise during his campaign.
Only about two in 10 Americans are confident that President-elect Trump will be able to lower prices in his first year in office, according to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Opinion Research.
In a poll released on January 16, 21% of adults said they were “very” or “extremely” confident in Trump’s ability to lower food and grocery costs in 2025, 19% expressed the same confidence in his ability to reduce housing costs, and 16% in his ability to lower health care costs in 2025, The Hill notes.
The vast majority of those surveyed said they were “somewhat/not at all confident” in its ability to reduce food and grocery costs in 2025 (61%); reduce housing costs in 2025 (64%); and reduce healthcare costs (65%).
Among those who are “moderately” confident in Trump’s ability to reduce spending in 2025, 17% say this about food and grocery spending, and 16% say this about housing and health care spending in 2025.
Slightly more Americans are confident that Trump will be able to create more jobs in 2025: 27% are “extremely/very” confident, 18% are “moderately” confident, and 54% are “not at all confident.”
The AP-NORC poll of 1 adults was conducted Jan. 147-9 and has a margin of error of 13 percentage points.
The Hill previously reported that Trump has softened his rhetoric on campaign promises. During his campaign, Trump made sweeping promises to voters to quickly cut spending, end the war in Ukraine before he took office, and use tariffs to support the American economy and manufacturing. After winning the election in November, Trump made it clear that fulfilling those promises might not be as easy as he had claimed.
