Being overweight can increase the risk of developing the disease, and eating certain foods can reduce its likelihood. What three foods should you eliminate from your diet today?
A new study has shown that weight control reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer and also helps to avoid other serious diseases.
Obesity can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer by as much as 30 percent, according to the Colon Study. And the type of foods you eat can also increase your risk of bowel cancer.
Dr Leslie Booth, director of research and patient and public engagement at Bowel Research UK, said:
"Our study found that 29 percent of the population do not read food labels, which if they did, would greatly help them avoid food groups. high in sugar, such as sugary fizzy drinks, or saturated fat, such as pies, cakes, pastries and cookies. Foods high in nitrates, such as processed or cured meats such as bacon, ham and salami, are also known to increase the risk of bowel cancer, so should be eaten in smaller quantities and no more than once a week.'
What foods are associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer?
Red meat
Red meat includes lamb, beef, goat and pork. It is recommended to eat less than 500g of red meat every week, which is between three and four portions depending on the size of the portion.
Processed meat
Cured or cured meats, including bacon, ham, sausages and salami, contain preservatives that can be harmful to your health. You should avoid eating processed meat too often and instead eat it as an occasional treat.
Alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol is also associated with a higher risk of bowel cancer and can contribute to becoming overweight or obese. Excessive alcohol consumption is also linked to other forms of cancer, including liver, breast and esophageal cancer.
