Newly appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio
The new head of the US State Department made a statement regarding the end of the war in Ukraine.
Marco Rubio, who was confirmed by the US Senate as US Secretary of State on Monday, January 20, said that resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine will require compromises from both sides. At the same time, he emphasized that Russia is the aggressor in this conflict, reports CNN.
The newly appointed head of the State Department added that he could not name specific dates for the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
"We want the war to end, and that's understandable. President Trump wants to be a leader who brings peace and stops the conflicts, but it's going to be difficult," Rubio told reporters.
He noted that in the process of ending any conflict, parties that cannot achieve their maximum goals must be ready to make concessions. At the same time, the Secretary of State refrained from giving specifics regarding possible concessions by Ukraine.
"We will not get ahead of ourselves by discussing the details of the negotiations. These issues, especially at this level, should be resolved diplomatically, not publicly. The final decisions on what to agree to will be made by the participating countries themselves - both Ukrainians and Russians," he added.
When asked about the likely timing of a ceasefire in Ukraine, Rubio replied: "This will be a priority for the president, so the process will begin almost immediately. Some preparatory steps are already underway, but it will be difficult, because the conflict remains bloody."
At the same time, he emphasized that ending the war is a necessity: "Russia is the aggressor in this conflict, but the war must end. This is the complexity of foreign policy."
