US President-elect Donald Trump has drawn the world's attention to Greenland after saying the world's largest island should be part of the United States. Representatives of the autonomous territory dependent on Denmark are thinking about rapprochement with America, but not in a political context, but in a football one.
Football is extremely popular in Greenland, with 5500 registered players, or about 10% of the population. The autonomous territory wants to participate in international football competitions, but there is no chance of joining UEFA, as the organization can only accept countries recognized by the United Nations. However, CONCACAF, the Confederation of North and Central American and Caribbean Association Football, has no such restrictions. As a result, the Greenland Football Association applied to join CONCACAF in May 2024 and could become part of the American football world.
“Applying for CONCACAF membership is a significant step in realizing our ambition to compete at the highest level. I am convinced that this will inspire our players and develop our football culture,” said Greenland coach Morten Rutkjer.
Greenland has a population of 57 and some of the most extreme weather conditions. Although soccer is the most popular sport on the island, it can only be played outdoors for a few months of the year.

As DW points out, Greenland's sports system mirrors that of Denmark. They have a structure with sports federations, and the various sports receive large state subsidies from Denmark. So, relative to their size, they are quite well funded.
"Those with promise in sports usually have to move to Denmark to fulfill their potential. Several players born in Greenland have reached the highest level, most notably former Chelsea and Ajax player Jesper Gronkyaer, who was born in Greenland," DW reminds.
In addition to the football team, Greenland also has other national teams. For example, Greenland has qualified for the World Handball Championship for men and women in the past, and also participates in international futsal tournaments.
